Steam vs. Epic Games! The flood of data leaked from Rockstar Games by the hacker group ShinyHunters continues to yield surprising discoveries.
You can check out a summary of the leaks in the video from our partner SanInPlay:
While initial analyses focused on astronomical daily profits and the dominance of next-gen consoles, a new compilation by the community shed light on the PC market, debunking one of the internet’s biggest myths: that the Epic Games Store is a sales flop.
According to internal company charts, extracted from the exposed database and shared by researchers like @videotech on X (formerly Twitter), the Epic store performs remarkably on par with the giant Steam in Grand Theft Auto V sales.
The raw numbers: Epic vs. Steam

The data details sales of the "PC Legacy" version from June 14, 2021, to April 3, 2026. During this period, the sales split between the two major PC platforms was:
- Steam: 3,404,598 copies sold
- Epic Games Store: 3,323,237 copies sold
The difference of less than 100,000 units over nearly five years shows an extremely balanced and profitable user base for both platforms.
The "Free Game" factor doesn’t factor into Epic Games’ numbers

Many players’ first reaction upon seeing Epic’s numbers was to attribute the success to the famous May 2020 campaign, when GTA 5 was distributed for free on the platform, even causing the store’s servers to crash.
However, @videotech was quick to clarify a fan’s question: the free copies are not inflating this chart.
The database tracked in these leaked files only accounts for the period from mid-2021 to the present day between Steam and Epic Games.
In other words, the 3.3 million copies registered on the Epic Games Store represent actual sales made by players who opened their wallets long after the free promotion had ended.

In the social media and PC forum bubble, it’s common to see harsh criticism of the Epic Games Store, with many users claiming they only use the platform to claim free games. Take-Two’s confidential data, however, tells a very different story.
With nearly 50% of the market share for recent GTA 5 sales on PC, Epic Games proves to be just as important a showcase as Steam for publishers.
In short, this fully justifies why giants like Rockstar continue to form partnerships and release their titles on the platform, ignoring the noise on social media and focusing on where the money actually flows.
