If you're the type who loves chatting while playing on the PlayStation 5 (PS5), get ready for a new security measure.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has begun sending emails to users announcing the implementation of a new age verification system for the use of online communication features.

The measure aims to bring the console in line with new global regulations on child safety online, a move that platforms like Discord and Roblox have also recently adopted.

What changes in practice on the PS5?

O que muda na prática no PS5?

Sony’s main goal is to ensure a safe virtual environment, offering “experiences appropriate for players’ ages and for families, while always respecting everyone’s privacy.”

Verification will be implemented globally. Here’s how your PS5 features will be affected if you decide not to complete age verification:

  • What will be blocked/limited: Access to the platform’s communication services, including sending text messages and participating in voice chats (Parties).
  • What will continue to work: You will not lose your console. Access to games (including online multiplayer itself), earning trophies, and browsing the PlayStation Store will continue to function normally.

So far, PlayStation has not set a deadline for users to complete the mandatory verification. The implementation is expected to roll out gradually over the coming weeks via system updates.
